Wreck-It Ralph Buyer’s Guide

wreckitralph_feature
Whenever a movie is released by Walt Disney Animation Studios there is an expectation that it will be awesome. And Wreck-It Ralph did not disappoint. Directed by Rich Moore (The Simpsons and Futurama), Wreck-It Ralph was well reviewed by critics and audiences a like. Great word of mouth lead this animated film to over $400 million in box office revenue worldwide.

This is an animated film for the whole family. Our buyer’s guide will give weight to accessibility and price. This is a movie that you want to be able to watch anywhere: planes, trains and automobiles, as well as home. With Disney re-releasing numerous animated films for home video over the next few weeks money conscious parents will want the best price.

In this review we will consider Xbox Video, iTunes, Blu-ray, Amazon Instant, Vudu and Google Play.

Wreckt-It Ralph on Vudu

Wreck It Ralph on Vudu is a well rounded digital download. Vudu actually offers a 3D option for a premium price of $34.99. For this buyer’s guide we will be considering the 2D version for $22.99. Owned by Walmart, Vudu, is a stand out store in the digital download industry. This option includes four extras: Moore’s Munchies, Sneak Peek, The Character’s of Wreck-It Ralph and The Worlds of Wreck-It Ralph. In particular, Wreck It-Ralph from Vudu, offers nearly universal accessibility through Blu-ray players, Android and iOS devices. You can watch this on nearly every tablet computer ever sold. If viewed on a television it comes in 1080p with 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus surround sound. Vudu offers a great balance of features, quality and accessibility.

Vudu Wreck-It Ralph Extras

  • Moore’s Munchies
  • Sneak Peek
  • The Characters of Wreck-It Ralph
  • The Worlds of Wreck-It Ralph

Wreckt-It Ralph on Google Play

I have been, more than usual, disappointed with Google Play. Google Play has not offered some new releases in recent weeks. That is not the case with Wreck-It Ralph. Streaming and downloadable in full 1080p the film comes with stereo sound. Google is in a conundrum. Numerous companies have taken its Android operating system and have derivative versions that leave out Google Play as a purchasing option. This is true in the case of Amazon’s Kindle tablets and Barnes and Noble’s Nook tablets. Neither of those tablet lines allow for purchases from Google Play. Well, it is not that good of an option anyway. For $19.99 you can watch Wreck-It Ralph on Android phones, tablets and the few devices that include Google Play as an option for your television.

Xbox Video

Wreck-It Ralph on Xbox Video

In 1080p resolution with 5.1 Dolby sound Wreck-It Ralph on Xbox Video cost the equivalent of $19.99 in points. You get over 27 minutes of extras and the film will work on all of Microsoft’s Windows 8 tablets, phones and Xbox 360. Most of the world uses computers with Microsoft’s computer operating system and the Xbox 360 was the besting selling console last quarter, so many of us are in their ecosystem. But, if mobile access is important to you, because many of us do not have Windows Phones or tablets, then you may want to pass on purchasing this movie from Xbox Video.

iTunes

Wreck-It Ralph on iTunes

iTunes, the most popular digital download service in the world, offers Wreck-It Ralph for a price of $19.99. You can watch this film on your television if you have an Apple TV as well as all other Apple products. It will also work on PCs with iTunes installed. When is Apple going to make iTunes for Android? Google is making all sorts of apps for the iPad and iPhone. If you are invested in the Apple device family a purchase from iTunes does not leave you feeling neglected and ripped-off, like a purchase from Google Play.

iTunes Wreck-It Ralph Extras

  • Paperman Theatrical Short
  • Bit by Bit: Creating The Worlds of Wreck-It Ralph
  • The Characters of Wreck-It Ralph
  • The Worlds of Wreck-It Ralph
  • Video Game Commercials

Wreck-It Ralph on Amazon Instant

How does Amazon charge the same price as iTunes? Flexibility in terms of where you can watch it may be a justification. The trade off between iTunes and Amazon Instant is one of access. iTunes offers a superior experience. This is seen, or should I say heard in the surround sound offered by iTunes. Wreck-It Ralph has extras with an iTunes purchase, but does not when you buy it from Amazon Instant. If extras and good sound are not important to you then this option may be acceptable.

Wreck-It Ralph on Blu-ray

We are using the Collector’s Edition of Wreck-It Ralph on Blu-ray. This 2D version cost $22.99. If you would like the 3D version and Digital Copy you will need to buy the Ultimate Collector’s Edition. It cost $27.99. The Collector’s Edition comes with two disc: a Blu-ray disc and a DVD. The english audio track is in 7.1 DTS-HD surround sound. The big draw back for this set is that it does not include any means to watch the movie on mobile devices. As all ways, you get the most extras when you buy a disc set. But I suspect that most of us will want this as an option on our mobile devices.

Wreck-It Ralph Blu-ray Extras

  • Paperman: Theatrical Short
  • Bit by Bit: Creating the Worlds of Wreck-It Ralph
  • Alternate & Deleted Scenes
  • Video Game Commercials
  • Disney Intermission
  • Sneak Peeks

Wrap Up

Mobility is key when buying movies for kids. The price of the Wreck-It Ralph Blu-ray options cost more with limited accessibility for the collector’s disc set (not much of a collector’s set). That leaves us to consider the digital download options. Google Play does not make it past the preliminary round. Amazon Instant is a limited experience. Xbox Video and iTunes are limited ecosystems. Even though it cost a few extra dollars, buying Wreck-It Ralph from Vudu is the best way to watch it.

Madagascar 3 Review

Madagascar 3
Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted is the first movie of the franchise to be available in 3D. For this installment the characters find themselves avoiding the law in Europe. The continent hopping team of zoo animals proved to be a really attractive option for parents and children during the summer of 2012.
Speaking with a friend recently he commented on how much he and his kids loved this movie. He mentioned that price is a primary determinant in how he chooses which place to buy movies for his children. Typically, when reviewing the best way to watch a movie for the home, our team considers the best possible options regarding quality, extra content and viewing options. Price is considered, but it is usually secondary.
For movies that are often bought for the home to anesthetize children, we will be taking a different approach. Our top consideration will be price, the price for the movie and devices that are used to watch them. How many people trust their 4-year-old with their new iPad? Exactly.
Our review for ways to watch Madagascar 3 includes options from Google Play, iTunes, Amazon Instant, Vudu and the Blu-ray disc set.

Madagascar 3 on Google Play

Madagascar 3 purchased  on Google Play gives you only the movie, but then again how many kids want to watch the making of an animated movie. You can watch the movie on  all Android tablets and many Android phones. The movie cost $19.99. There are not many devices that will allow you to easily watch this film on your HDTV. And it appears to be a bit confusing about the crossover between Youtube and Google Play. You can watch this movie on Google’s only self-made tablet the Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 is priced starting at $199.

Madagascar 3 on iTunes

Now with Apple’s iTunes you get a few more options in terms of extras. They have a behind scenes look with the filmmakers and the cast, three deleted scenes and an interactive map.  The interactive map highlights real life locations that inspired locations in the film. This can be an educational experience for kids. At the price of $19.99 it the best digital download option regarding content.

Of course this options works with all Apple’s iOS options, including the new iPad Mini. This new device starts at $329, a better price point, but still not on par with competing tables.

Madagascar 3 on Amazon Instant

You get only the movie with this purchase. For $19.99, that is it. But then again Amazon is not pushing the movie features, but the accessibility. You can watch this on numerous devices. Ironically, you can not watch this on any other Android devices other than Amazon’s own Kindle Fire HD 8.9 and Kindle Fire HD. The Kindle Fire HD is $199

Madagascar 3 on Vudu

Vudu’s offering of Madagascar 3 is the only digital download option that comes close to what iTunes offers. My gripe with Vudu is that it limits the mobile experience to Standard Definition on all iOS devices. But, hey you get more than just the movie for $22.99. And you have tons of options to watch it on your television at home.

Madagascar 3 on Blu-ray

When it comes to features, the Madagascar 3 Blu-ray 3D can not be beat. The price of $34.99 may scare off some. All of the usual extras, such as, director commentary present. One thing that may be of interest to the kids is the Blu-ray exclusive “Get Them to the Train” game. It even includes the Making of How to Train Your Dragon (go figure). There is a digital copy, but Android users are again out of luck. The standard definition digital copy of Madagascar 3 only works with iOS devices, Macs and PCs.

Madagascar 3 Wrap Up

Currently, Amazon and Google both offer Madagascar 3 for $19.99. They both offer the most affordable tablet computers. But in this contest the award will go to Amazon, because of there numerous ways to watch the movie, not only on their own devices, but on numerous others, including the iPad.
