Dolby, the premiere theater and home audio brand, is deploying their new Atmos platform to theaters. Atmos is a transition from channel based audio to object oriented sound. So, instead of sound being sent to a group of speakers it can now, through programming, be sent to specific speakers in a speaker array. If that does not make sense watch this video from Dolby. Brave, from Pixar, was the first movie to use this new standard. Unfortunately, the standard seems to be on a slow roll out nationwide, with availability in only a few theaters.
